FAQs
Frequent Asked Questions:
Is Matua really the Original New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc?
Yes! Back in 1974, Matua made New Zealand's very first Sauvignon Blanc. What started with a small batch of just 400 bottles helped kick-start a wine style that would eventually put New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the world map. Not bad for a little tin shed in West Auckland.
Does Matua have a cellar door open to the public in New Zealand?
No, our cellar door sites are NOT open to the public at this time.
What makes Matua Sauvignon Blanc different?
We've been making Sauvignon Blanc since before New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was a thing. Our style is crisp, vibrant and fruit-forward, bursting with zesty citrus, tropical fruit and that unmistakably fresh character New Zealand is famous for.
What is the meaning behind the MOKO illustration?
Our Moko is inspired by the traditional Māori art of tā moko and has been part of Matua's identity from the beginning. Its design represents our connection to New Zealand, our heritage and the pioneering spirit that has shaped Matua since 1974.
Why do you make your wines in New Zealand instead of more traditional wine regions?
Because New Zealand is home. Its cool climate, long growing season and extraordinary landscapes create the fresh, vibrant wines Matua is known for. From Marlborough and Nelson to Central Otago, we work with grapes from some of the country's most celebrated wine regions.
What are the alcohol percentages of Matua wines?
Alcohol content varies depending on the wine and vintage. You'll find the exact ABV clearly listed on the label of each bottle or package.
Are Matua wines gluten free?
Yes, we are! Wine is naturally gluten free, and Matua wines are made from grapes rather than gluten-containing grains.
What does the snowflake on my bottle mean?
That's our Chill Check! The snowflake on select Matua bottles changes color when your wine reaches the ideal chilled temperature. When it turns blue, you know it's time to pour.
What is a Bagnum?
Think Magnum, minus the bottle. The Matua Bagnum is a lightweight, easy-to-carry pouch filled with the equivalent of two standard bottles of wine. Easy to chill, easy to pour and even easier to share.
Why do you put your wines in the Bagnum?
Because good wine doesn't always need a glass bottle. The Bagnum is lighter and easier to carry, making it a great option for picnics, parties, beach days, boats, backyard hangs and wherever else you're headed.
Are your pouches BPA free?
Yes, our Bagnum pouches are BPA free and designed specifically for safely storing wine.
Is one Bagnum really equal to 2 bottles of wine?
It really is. One 1.5L Matua Bagnum holds the same amount of wine as two standard 750ml bottles. Double the wine, double the good times.
How long does a Bagnum stay fresh after opening?
The Bagnum is designed to help protect the wine from air after opening, keeping it fresher for longer than a traditional opened bottle. For the best experience, follow the storage guidance on the pack and enjoy within the recommended timeframe.
What packaging formats does Matua come in?
Matua is available in a variety of formats depending on the wine and where you shop, including our classic bottles and the 1.5L Bagnum and also our Cooler cans. Check your local retailer to see what's available near you.
What foods pair best with Matua wines?
Matua wines play very well with food. Sauvignon Blanc loves seafood, fresh salads, citrusy dishes and a little spice, while our Pinot Noir is right at home with grilled meats, mushrooms and richer dishes. But there are no hard rules. Pair it with whatever tastes good to you.
Are your wines available in retail stores?
Yes! Matua is available at retailers across the globe. Availability varies by location and wine, so use our store finder or check with your local retailer before heading over.
Do you ship Matua wines to all states in the U.S.?
Wine shipping laws vary by state, so unfortunately we can't ship everywhere. Enter your shipping address at checkout to see whether delivery is available in your area.
Do you offer free shipping?
Shipping offers and promotions may vary. Check our current shipping information at checkout for the latest rates and any available offers.
Do your wines have sulfites?
Yes. Sulfites occur naturally during winemaking and may also be added in small amounts to help preserve freshness and quality. Matua wines containing sulfites are labeled accordingly.
How long does the wine stay fresh after you open it?
For a standard bottle, we recommend resealing it, popping it in the fridge and enjoying it within a few days for the freshest flavor. Our Bagnum is designed to keep air away from the wine, helping it stay fresh for longer after opening.
Does the wine need to be refrigerated after opening?
Yes. Once opened, keeping your Matua in the fridge helps preserve its freshness and flavor. That goes for whites, rosés and reds. Just give red wine a little time to come back toward serving temperature before your next glass.
Are screw caps as good as corks?
Absolutely. Screw caps help protect the wine from oxygen and preserve the bright, fresh flavors we want you to taste. They're also easy to open, easy to reseal and require exactly zero corkscrews. Win-win.
How should I serve Matua wine?
Our whites and rosés are best served chilled. Look for the Chill Check snowflake on select bottles: when it turns blue, you're good to go. Pinot Noir is best slightly cooler than room temperature. And while a wine glass is nice, we're not here to judge your picnic cup.
How is Matua committed to sustainability?
Caring for the land that gives us our wine is part of how we do things. Our winery and vineyards are Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) certified, and we're powered by 100% renewable electricity. We're also working toward net zero emissions by 2030, because looking after New Zealand's incredible wine-growing regions means thinking well beyond the next vintage.
